FAQ

1.What is Propylene Glycol Alginate?

Propylene Glycol Alginate, also known as propylene dibasic alginate, propylene dibasic alginate, propylene glycol alginate, propylene glycol alginate, propylene glycol fucoalginate, is an alginic acid compound consisting of part of the carboxyl group esterified by propylene glycol, and part of the carboxyl group neutralized by alkali. It is made from alginic acid extracted from natural seaweeds by deep processing, with the appearance of white or light yellow powder, and becomes viscous colloid after dissolved in water. It is often used as thickening, stabilizing and emulsifying agent for beverage products. Esterification degree/% ≥ 80.0. Insoluble ash/% ≤ 1.0. Loss of weight on drying/% ≤ 20.0

2.How is Propylene Glycol Alginate produced?

Put 1 mol of fucoidan into the reaction kettle, add 5% hydrochloric acid to acidify, and then wash away the by-product sodium chloride with water. Centrifugal dehydration and then use ethanol to dehydrate outwardly, after the water is removed cleanly, replace the air in the kettle with nitrogen, drive the air through the propylene oxide, in 160 ~ 180 ℃, 0.2 MPa or so esterification. When the passage of propylene oxide to 1 mol after stopping the passage of propylene oxide, continue to react for 1 h after centrifugal separation to take the solids, and then wash the solids with ethanol after centrifugal separation drying, crushing, packaging that is the finished product. The aqueous solution containing 30% alginic acid, 15.2% sodium alginate and 2.2% calcium alginate was placed in a stainless steel reactor, and reacted with an excess of propylene oxide gas for 30 min at 79 ℃. After cooling, it was vacuum filtered, washed with acetone, dried and crushed to obtain the finished product. From alginic acid and propylene oxide, with alkali as catalyst, under pressure at 70 ℃ after the reaction with methanol washing, pressing, and then after drying,

3.How is Propylene Glycol Alginate stored and distributed?

Propylene glycol alginate is stable in nature, soluble in water, dilute organic acid solution, insoluble in methanol, ethanol, benzene and other organic solvents, but part of the esterified product can be dissolved in ethanol solution with content below 60%. However, the solubility decreases when it is stored for a long time under high temperature. Its pH value is 3~4 (1% aqueous solution), easy to absorb moisture, brown when heated to 55 ℃, 220 ℃ produced charring, 400 ℃ produced ash. Its relative density is 1.46, neither gel nor precipitation in acidic solution of pH3.4. It has the ability of anti-salt precipitation, except for copper, chromium, iron (trivalent), lead, barium and other ions are not stable, a large number of propylene glycol alginate should be placed in a cool, dry place in a gas-tight container for storage.

4.What is Propylene Glycol Alginate used for?

Mainly used as emulsion stabilizer and thickener. Our country stipulates that it can be used in condensed milk, chewing gum, chocolate, hydrogenated vegetable oil, salsa and vegetable protein drink, the maximum use amount is 5.0g/kg; in dairy products, fruit juice, the maximum use amount is 3.0g/kg; used in emulsified flavor as emulsification stabilizer, the maximum use amount is 2.0g/kg; in ice cream, the maximum use amount is 1.0g/kg; in beer and beverages, the maximum use amount is 0.3g/kg. It is used in cold drinks, medicine and other products with emulsifying, thickening and stabilizing effects, and is an excellent stabilizer for organic health products; thickener; emulsifier; foaming agent; solvent for extracting spices.
