1.What is DL-Malic Acid?

DL-Malic acid is a mixture of D-malic acid and L-malic acid. Malic acid, also known as: 2-hydroxybutanedioic acid, has two stereoisomers due to an asymmetric carbon atom in the molecule. Namely, the left-handed form (L-malic acid) and the right-handed form (D-malic acid). In nature, malic acid exists in three forms, namely D-malic acid, L-malic acid and DL-malic acid. Malic acid is stable under normal conditions and hygroscopic when humidity is high. White crystals of triclinic crystal system. Melting point 130°C; Relative density 1.601; Solubility Soluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone and many other polar solvents. Used in the food industry as an acidifier, color retainer, preservative and emulsion stabilizer for egg yolks, etc. Also used in pharmaceuticals.

2.How is DL-Malic Acid produced?

Chemical synthesis method of DL-malic acid 200kg of maleic anhydride was dissolved in 400kg of water in stainless steel autoclave at 185℃±3℃ and 1.0MPa with stirring reaction for 6~8h. During the reaction, when the temperature was 120℃, maleic acid and water acted to produce malic acid; and when the temperature was 130℃, maleic acid itself was isomerized to transbutylene dicarboxylic acid. And under the reaction conditions, malic acid and transbutylene dioic acid exists an equilibrium, so when the reaction is over, the ratio of maleic acid to malic acid is 1:17. If transbutylene dioic acid is added proportionally at the early stage of the reaction, the yield can be increased from 63% to more than 90%. After the reactants are cooled to below 100°C, they are pressed into a distillation kettle at 60°C and concentrated under reduced pressure, then cooled, crystallized, centrifuged and dried to obtain the finished product.

3.How is DL-Malic Acid stored and distributed?

4.What is DL-Malic Acid used for?

It is generally believed that L-malic acid has important physiological functions, but half of the D-type of D L-malic acid is physiologically ineffective. It can be used as one of the synthetic raw materials for descaling agent and fluorescent whitening agent in chemical industry.
